Join up and Fight for your Country!
When we first started to look at WWI none of us understood why anyone would want to fight in a war like this, however the more we spoke about it the more songs we sung from the time, it all started to become clear.
We looked at some of the propaganda that was used on the posters and decided to make our own leaflets using some of the techniques. It soon became clear to us that the soldiers that enlisted didn't know what was about to happen or how hard i would be.
Some of the things we first looked at were the benefits; these helped us to understand a lot. The soldiers were given free food whilst serving for their country. There were perks such as; medals after the war; dental plans, healthcare and they were also fully clothed and equipped in a smart uniform! Then we looked at some of the other propaganda around at the time - this included songs like 'It's a long way to Tipperary' and 'Pack up your Troubles'. We practised singing and whistleing the tunes of these to get us in the mood. People were excited to join the war, they wanted to go and fight with their friends and have fun - noone expected it to go on for as long as it did.
Below are some of our examples of leaflets we made to convince the men of 1914 to join the War effort.
